West Michigan Weather: How It Affects Lifestyles & Local Market

West Michigan weather consists of four seasons with distinct attributes to each. Because of the changing seasons, the West Michigan community aims to provide a variety of attractions and things to do in the area that are suitable to each particular season. In the spring, the flowers are blooming and the weather is cool and mild. In the summer, the weather is warm and mild with light breezes coming off the water. Fall weather is starting to turn a little chillier and winter can see some harsh weather with snow and cold.

The weather in the area can have an affect on lifestyle and the local market both positively and negatively. However, West Michigan has so many diverse recreational activities designed for specific seasons that a hit in lifestyle is never too severe. Also, because different people enjoy different activities throughout the year, the tourism industry tends to remain fairly consistent throughout the year with a boom during the summer months and a slight drop during spring and fall.

Because tourism is a consistent part of the economy, this does not seem to affect the local market too much one way or the other. Housing purchases do tend to increase in the summer months, mostly by people who look for summer homes and cottages. Also, rental revenues increase during the summer as well. Winter also sees a slight increase in rental activity because of vacationers in the area. Only when you see extreme temperatures and conditions do you see a corresponding market change and this is usually temporary.

Even though the market is not affected severely by the weather, lifestyles can be affected. This mostly means a change and not necessarily for the worse. In the summer months, water activities and beach living is extremely popular as is golfing. Boating, fishing, hiking and sight seeing are popular with tourists as well as residents. In the winter hunting, skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are favored activities. Fall and springtime are great for sight seeing, and hiking. The significant change in lifestyle for most residents consists of the types of activities in which they participate correlating to the weather conditions.

For West Michigan residents who do not like the harsher weather, some choose to stay indoors more often than in the milder climates. Roads may be slippery and it is more difficult to get out of the house safely and comfortably. But generally, most residents have adapted to the seasons very well and are acclimated to the differences in weather. Not only are they able to cope with changing weather conditions but they celebrate the differences and enjoy having a diversity of activities to participate in during all the seasons. In addition, tourists come to the area during the different seasons to participate in the various seasonal activities West Michigan has to offer.
