Given the popularity and beauty of the Lake Michigan coast, it might seem like an impossible task to find a luxury vacation home that doesn’t completely break your budget. And it is true – property and luxury homes along Lake Michigan can be very expensive. That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t some values to be had along the way if you know where to look. One of the best ways to find value is to retain the services of a real estate agent experienced in the Lake Michigan market who can help you hunt down available properties and sort through them to uncover the best deal.

Beyond using an experienced Realtor, there are a few handy tips you can use to narrow your focus and help you come up with that luxury home you have been dreaming of for a price you didn’t think was possible.

  • Give up the shoreline. Most likely, you want to find a home that is located along the shores of Lake Michigan. There is only one problem – so does everyone else. Because of the high demand, the homes that are located right on the shoreline of the lake tend to be significantly more expensive. If you are willing to move inland a little bit, you can find a luxury home that will be a great getaway without the shocking price tag.
  • Give up some square footage. The bigger the better is most people’s motto when they are shopping for a vacation home. However, bigger homes have bigger price tags, and you might be able to enjoy your vacation property just as much with a smaller place. Also, smaller homes usually cost less in the way of utilities, so that is something to consider as well.
  • Do-it-yourself luxury. Instead of buying a vacation home that is already luxurious, what about purchasing an older place and bringing it up to your luxury standards with a little work? If you are up to the job, or don’t mind hiring out contractors to do the work for you, it may be possible to wind up with a beautiful luxury home for much less than if you had purchased an already updated property. Not everyone will want to deal with the hard work and hassles that can come with a renovation, so make sure you are up to the task before purchasing a project home.
