Park Township is the portion of the Holland area that most buyers from outside West Michigan are actually imagining when they picture "living near Lake Michigan in Holland." It's the township that contains Holland State Park, Tunnel Park, and Kirk Park — the beach access that defines the Holland lakeshore lifestyle. If you're buying in Holland because of the lake, Park Township deserves a close look.

The Lake Michigan Access Advantage

Park Township's defining characteristic is its relationship to Lake Michigan. Holland State Park beach — one of Michigan's most visited — is in Park Township. Tunnel Park with its dune ridge walk is in Park Township. Kirk Park, Ottawa County's quieter lakeshore alternative, is in Park Township. Buyers who purchase in Park Township can genuinely walk or bike to Lake Michigan from many addresses — not drive to it. This is a fundamentally different relationship to the lake than buying in Holland city or Holland Township, where the beach requires a 10-minute drive.

Macatawa — The Waterfront Village Within Park Township

Macatawa is a small historic cottage community within Park Township at the Lake Macatawa channel where it meets Lake Michigan — one of West Michigan's most distinctive and sought-after residential enclaves. Macatawa Park properties offer direct water access, historic cottage character, and a community identity that is separate from both Holland city and standard Park Township suburban development. Properties in Macatawa proper are rarely available and command significant premiums when they do come to market.

West Ottawa Schools — The District That Drives the Premium

Park Township is served entirely by West Ottawa Public Schools — ranked #1 in Ottawa County by Niche 2026 and a consistent US News Best High Schools recognition recipient. The school district is the single most important factor driving Park Township's price premium over comparable homes in other Holland-area townships. Buyers who have specifically chosen West Ottawa for their children's education and want the shortest possible commute to the lake end up in Park Township by necessity.

What the Price Range Actually Buys

Park Township's entry point for a solid single-family home in West Ottawa district starts around $450,000–$500,000 for a well-maintained resale without water views. Homes with Lake Macatawa water views or channel access run $700,000–$1,500,000. Direct Lake Michigan frontage starts at approximately $1,500,000 for older cottage-scale properties and extends to $5,000,000+ for newer construction with premium positions. The price spectrum is wide — but the floor is meaningfully higher than Holland city proper.

What You Give Up in Park Township

Park Township has no downtown of its own. The 8th Street restaurants, Lemonjello's Coffee, Hope College events, and Holland's urban walkability are 10–15 minutes away by car — accessible but not walkable. For buyers who specifically want to walk to dinner and walk to the lake from the same address, Park Township delivers the lake half of that equation but not the downtown half. Holland city can provide walking to downtown; Park Township provides walking to the lake. Few addresses in the Holland area provide both.
