About Manistee

Manistee is located at the mouth of the Manistee River on Lake Michigan.

In 1841 a sawmill was constructed on theManisteeLakeand then another on theManisteeRiver. By 1849 more settlers were coming. Things were going well until a fire swept through in 1871. Half of the buildings in the city were destroyed. Much of the city was rebuilt but this time it was brick.

In 1881 salt was discovered beneath Manistee. By 1885 there were 40 sawmills and the population was up to 14,000. Now Manistee is a stable, diverse industrial base and also is a top fruit-producing agricultural center. Manistee will always be an amazing place to live with its natural beauty of the forests, lakes and rivers.

The Ramsdell Theatre invites you to enjoy the fine arts. If this is one of your favorite things to do you will not be disappointed with the performances here. There is also the lovely Riverwalk, Trolley Tours and historic downtown Manistee. These things alone could keep you busy for days.
