West Michigan Outdoor Activities Guide — 2026

West Michigan's outdoor recreation inventory is one of the most underappreciated aspects of what the region offers — buyers who move here from Chicago, Detroit, or other metro areas consistently report being surprised by the depth and variety of outdoor experiences available within 30 minutes of their front door. Lake Michigan is the obvious anchor, but the full picture includes dune hiking, river kayaking, paved trail cycling, winter skiing, inland lake paddleboarding, Great Lakes fishing, and mountain biking — all within the lakeshore corridor.

Hiking

Saugatuck Dunes State Park is West Michigan's most dramatic hiking terrain — 2.5 miles of trails through forested dunes to Lake Michigan, with elevation changes that feel genuinely challenging despite the relatively short distance. The dune ridges provide elevated Lake Michigan views that reward the climb. Located in Allegan County near Saugatuck.

Rosy Mound Natural Area in West Olive (Ottawa County) offers a shorter but spectacular dune hike with direct Lake Michigan beach access. The boardwalk and trail system is one of the best-maintained in Ottawa County and is genuinely accessible for all fitness levels while still providing the dune experience.

Yankee Springs Recreation Area in Barry County (Gun Lake area) provides 15+ miles of trails through hardwood forest, with Chief Noonday Tower offering the highest point in the lower Ottawa County region. The Gun Lake trail system serves hikers, mountain bikers, and snowmobilers in season.

Kayaking and Paddling

Lake Macatawa in Holland is one of West Michigan's most accessible kayaking destinations — calm inland water with views of the Holland skyline, marina activity, and the Lake Michigan channel. Multiple launch points and rental options available.

The Kalamazoo River through Saugatuck and Douglas is West Michigan's most scenic river paddle — the section from Allegan to Saugatuck (approximately 33 miles) is a classic multi-day trip. Day trips from Saugatuck cover the harbor section with views of downtown, the chain ferry, and Lake Michigan inlet.

Spring Lake near Grand Haven offers flat-water paddleboarding and kayaking on a 1,251-acre connected lake — the channel to the Grand River and ultimately Lake Michigan makes Spring Lake one of West Michigan's most interesting paddle destinations for exploration.

Cycling

The Lakeshore Trail in Holland connects Lakewood Boulevard to the lakeshore — a dedicated path used by cyclists, runners, and inline skaters year-round. The Kal-Haven Trail runs 34 miles from Kalamazoo to South Haven through rural Allegan and Van Buren Counties — one of Michigan's best rail-trail conversions.

Holland's street network has dedicated bike lanes on most major corridors — the city consistently ranks as one of Michigan's most bike-accessible communities outside of college towns.

Dune Climbing

Mount Baldhead in Saugatuck is the most accessible major dune climb in West Michigan — 303 steps to the summit with panoramic views of the Kalamazoo River, the harbor, and Lake Michigan. Free access, located adjacent to downtown Saugatuck. A genuine cardiovascular challenge that rewards with genuinely spectacular views.

Skiing and Winter Recreation

Cannonsburg Ski Area in Belmont (near Rockford) (15 minutes north of Grand Rapids) provides accessible downhill skiing and tubing for West Michigan residents — not destination skiing but genuinely useful for casual skiers and those teaching children the sport. Bittersweet Ski Area in Otsego (45 minutes from Holland) offers 20 runs and is the most accessible serious ski destination for lakeshore corridor residents.

Fishing

West Michigan offers some of the Midwest's best freshwater fishing — Lake Michigan salmon and trout fishing from charter boats out of Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon; pike, bass, and walleye on Lake Macatawa and inland lakes; Gun Lake's excellent multi-species fishery; and the Pere Marquette and Muskegon Rivers for world-class steelhead.
