Looking for a Lake Michigan vacation cottage is an exciting process – that can also be a little bit intimidating at the start. After all, there are so many great options, different locations, sizes, styles, and more. In order to have an enjoyable search that successfully leads you to the perfect vacation property, you will want to have a plan in place right from the start. Use these four tips to get started down the right path.

1. Work with a local Realtor

The knowledge that an experienced Realtor can bring to the process can’t be replaced by any amount of internet research. If you want to consider all options and have a professional on your side during negotiations, a Realtor is the logical choice. Once you provide them with your specific needs and budget, you can expect to have an impressive list of options presented to you for consideration.

2. Pick Location First

Where do you want to be along the Lake Michigan shore line? Are you most interested in a short drive from your permanent home to get out to your vacation cottage? Maybe you are willing to drive a little further for some extra peace and quiet? Whatever your preference, settle on a general location first before diving too far into your Lake Michigan Real Estate Properties search. With this point decided, the search will be much easier and more focused.

3. Keep an Open Mind

You might have a specific square footage number in mind when you start out, but be open to seeing all kinds of properties in your desired region. You never know when you might be surprised. If you are looking for at least 1,200 square feet, you may skip seeing a home that is around 1,000 square feet but would have been perfect for your needs. Not all properties are well-represented on paper, so it is wise to be open to seeing a range of properties before making up your mind.

4. Stay in the Region you are Shopping In

If you have settled on a particular part of the coast, but have never vacationed there before, try to arrange at least a weekend trip to the area. By renting a cottage, or even staying in a hotel, you can get a feel for what life is like in the area and what kind of amenities are nearby. When considering something as significant as a Lake Michigan real estate purchase, it is smart to take a couple days and make sure you are buying in an area that you will really enjoy.  One region to consider would be Southwest Michigan, home to  Lake Michigan Real Estate Fennville Michigan.
