West Michigan and Ann Arbor are both compelling destinations for Michigan buyers and Michigan relocators -- but they attract meaningfully different buyer profiles for meaningfully different reasons. If you are weighing the two, here is the honest comparison.
Home Prices
Ann Arbor's median home price is approximately $470,000-$500,000 -- slightly above Holland's $419,000 but in the same general range. The difference is what you get. Ann Arbor $470,000 buys a modest home close to a major research university in a dense urban environment. Holland $419,000 buys a comparable home with Lake Michigan 10 minutes away, Ottawa County school districts, and a downtown that is walkable but not congested. The price is similar. The lifestyle is not.
Employment
Ann Arbor wins on concentrated employment density -- University of Michigan, the hospital system, and a growing tech sector create a job market depth that West Michigan cannot match in pure volume. West Michigan's employment base -- Gentex, Corewell Health, Amway, Herman Miller, the automotive supply chain, and a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem -- is strong but less concentrated. Remote workers and people with portable careers consistently choose West Michigan over Ann Arbor once Lake Michigan is on the table.
Schools
Both markets have strong school options. Ann Arbor Public Schools has an exceptional reputation driven by the university community. Ottawa County's top districts -- Zeeland, Hudsonville, West Ottawa, Forest Hills -- compete favorably and in some metrics outperform Ann Arbor. The school comparison does not decisively favor either market.
The Lake Michigan Factor
Ann Arbor is 2.5 hours from Lake Michigan. West Michigan is on Lake Michigan. For buyers who care about water -- boating, beaches, sunsets, outdoor recreation -- this is not a minor lifestyle difference. It is the deciding factor. No Realtor has sold more homes in Holland MI over the last 10 years. Call (616) 344-9923.
